In a world where mobile phones are gaining increasing acceptance as terminals for data communication, the device's ability to securely handle transactions is greater than ever. Even though it is probably not widely known the fact is that the mobile phone is the most deployed device for security tokens in the world! The mobile phone has overtaken the PC as the world's most prevalent device capable of hosting security tokens. This is due to the SIM card (Subscriber Identity Module). The SIM, as the storage facility for keys, enables the handset to perform digital signatures and thus become a Personal Trusted Device, capable of facilitating secure transactions within a mobile and fixed Internet e-service framework.
In order to maximize revenue from these new services, it is important to target the entire subscriber base, both now and in the future. However, without the adequate infrastructure in place, delivering secure wireless applications to end-users can become a complex and costly task, especially for smaller content providers. One way of reducing the complexity is by using secure services offered by a Trusted Operator.
A trusted operator offers the same voice/data services as a traditional operator but also takes on the role of offering security schemes that leverage digital signatures/certificates. This enables the handset to become a trusted personal device for the secure signing of transactions and authentication of users.
