Commercial NFC related services waiting for handsets

Tags: OTA, SWP, terminals

The showstopper for commercial roll outs of NFC related applications like proximity payments is the lack of SWP/HCI enabled handsets. The SIM card has many advantages in being the Secure Element for storing the applications. One of the most important ones is that it is Over The Air (OTA) updatable making it possible to in a secure way download and personalize applications WITHOUT the need for proxy clients residing in the handset. But the handset needs to support this and handset manufacturers has not launched these commercially yet. This has already impacted projects and delayed them substantially. We have already waited for the technology to be stable and available for a couple of years whiles trials and pilots has learned us that the user acceptance is really positive. At the same time the business models has been scrutinized and outlined so the time has not been spoiled. We have this hear say in Sweden  "If you are waiting for something good you can never wait too long"...
